About Happy Home Learning
Happy Home Learning is run by infant specialist Nicola, Mum to 3 year old Edith and 6 year old Rosa-Mae who is on a mission to make learning accessible for everyone. Inspired by the challenges of supporting her child’s home learning with a little sibling in tow, and her discovery that teaching in the classroom is very different to teaching at home, she shares twenty years of teaching expertise and most importantly, stealthy tips as a busy mum.
Give your child the best start
How to REALLY learn the times tables for age 5+
This one hour online tutorial for primary children promises to:
- Boost your child's confidence and maths ability.
- Help you use the correct school methods.
- Motivate all the family.
Times tables knowledge is crucial. It underpins so many areas of mathematical learning. For this reason, Year 4 pupils now sit a government test. This tests their quick recall of times table facts up to 12x12.
Repetition is important for young children to learn, but it needn’t be boring. This resource teaches, step by step, all the crucial stages of learning the concept of multiplication in fun, active, multisensory ways and not just how to chant it! Here is a tiny taster of a tutorial that supports with an earlier stage of learning multiplication.
Whilst the online tutorial is particularly suitable for families with children in Years 1, 2 and 3, the skills taught through the videos and the additional booklets will support the learning of all the times tables.
Short of time? You can view these 6 sections at your own pace. Each has been professionally edited and is conveniently broken down into 2-3 minute videos. Alternatively, you have the option of watching each section in full. You can pause, repeat sections or simply pick back up from where you last finished viewing. Easy!
- Chanting: 6 minutes
- Counting: 4 minutes
- Applying: 12 minutes
- Multiplication: 30 minutes
- Problem Solving: 3 minutes
- Story book recommendations: 12 minutes
A 17 page colour photo illustrated booklet is jam packed with handy hints to dip into as your child progresses throughout each school year.
Clear end of year expectations are shared too:
Relax and watch these videos with or without your child, from your phone, tablet or computer. I promise that after watching these uplifting videos you will:
- Feel inspired to try these playful, easy to replicate activities.
- Be confident helping your child in ways that are consistent with the latest school methods.
- Understand key maths language and the end of year expectations.

FAQ
-
How long can I access the tutorial for?
There is no time limit for watching the videos. You can conveniently use these materials at your own pace and dip into the relevant sections as your child grows older.
-
My children are different ages. How will I know which parts are relevant to them?
A 2 minute introductory video will clearly explain where to start viewing. Or you may wish to browse a succinct PDF that signposts you for each year group. I am mindful that age isn't always the best guide to stage. Therefore you are encouraged to view the earlier videos to learn more simple methods or view later videos to offer greater challenge.
-
My child is 5 but in Reception. Is this resource suitable?
The new Early Years Curriculum for Reception children now proposes introducing children to 'odd' and 'even' numbers. These videos will help with this. I am sure that an able Reception child, particularly in the summer term, would enjoy being challenged by the playful, active ideas for learning to chant in twos. Remember, this resource is designed to be suitable for your child as they grow throughout primary school. You have constant access to this resource, so you would be able to dip into the videos once again, as your child changes year group.
-
I am short of time. How much time will I need to use this resource?
Watching every video would take nearly an hour. However, I recommend just dipping into the sections that are relevant for your child's year group. You can try the activities in each 2-3 minute section with your child until they are confident and then move on. This resource is useful for you to support your child's learning at their own pace.
-
Can you view the videos and booklets from your phone?
Yes! These can be viewed from a phone, tablet or computer.
-
Are these suitable for watching with my children?
Absolutely! In fact, in the introduction I recommend that you do just that. They are designed to inspire your child to want to learn in new and exciting ways.
-
How would you recommend I use the videos?
The PDF in the introduction will provide you with clear guidance on where to start. The beauty of this resource is that you can begin from your child's unique starting point. If you have an able child, you have the option of viewing videos featured later on in the tutorial to offer challenge. If you are concerned about potential gaps in your child's learning, you may wish to view earlier sections. Most sections are conveniently broken up into 2-3 minute blocks. I recommend making sure that your child is completely secure and confident with each block before moving on. Conveniently, this online tool will remember which sections you have viewed and completed, so that when you take a break, you can simply return and continue from where you left off. Of your course you can revisit sections as many times as you wish. Repetition is beneficial for younger and older learners alike. If you have an older child, you may wish to spend more time dipping into the downloadable 'top tips' and glossary booklets.

I am a hospital school tutor. Would you recommend this resource?
The films are very child friendly and, in my experience, children learn brilliantly from other children. Children also learn from other children's mistakes, as featured in these videos. In fact, this can be reassuring for a child who is struggling to learn a new concept. Although a child in hospital may be unable to join in with the full range of activities, the videos are playful and uplifting. They illustrate how food and very basic items can be transformed into educational resources. And that, in fact, a child's most precious learning resource involves spending time learning with an enthusiastic, confident and skilled adult.

Nicola's resources are amazing and really help to focus on what is expected at each stage, and ways to help the kids enjoy learning. My son loves seeing other children learning too, and the videos keep him engaged. Keep up the great work, and we will be with you every step of the way!

Read MoreHow times have changed! As a grandparent of four children under ten, this resource will assist me with the homework activities when I have the children after school. I have enjoyed watching some of the videos with the older children which kept their full attention. They especially loved watching ‘Miss Mae’. I would like to have had this amount of fun when I was learning many years ago!
